Will Kurtz has an incredibly interesting style for his work. He works using newspaper to make realistic life-size sculptures of people. He uses the vibrant colors of the newspapers and the stories within them in order to tell a story about the people he's sculpting. He picks every day people in order to try to garner a sense of familiarity and closeness to them; they seem like approachable people, like people you could know. He uses newspaper as his main medium because of its short lived life, reminiscent of our short span of time on this earth. He wanted a material to use that keeps him from getting distracted too much with detail. He takes images of the people in the city for reference. He chooses people who seem endearing to him, but he tries not to use too many photos so he doesn't get too enveloped in detail. He wants it to remain an intuitive process. His armatures incredibly important and time consuming. After he finishes them, he uses newspaper and scotch tape and begins layering to create his pieces. Called one show about dogs "Another Shit Show", because he put dog feces in many places. And being made out of glue and newspaper, what he referred to as "shit", he thought it would be a funny name for the show.
